Financial help for Indigenous uni students

Tax-free Equity Scholarships are available to help Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students find the money they need to go to uni.

Indigenous students starting or continuing uni mid-year in 2008 can now apply for scholarships online. Equity Scholarships aim to increase participation in higher education by students needing financial assistance.

Put simply, any student experiencing financial hardship could be eligible for an Equity Scholarship.

And the Equity Scholarships available to Indigenous students help not only those studying an undergraduate degree but also students completing a university preparation course.

There are two broad types of Equity Scholarships – Commonwealth Scholarships and Institution Equity Scholarships – and the scholarships available range from one-off $250 book bursaries to $4,000 a year for five years.

Many of the scholarships are specifically for Indigenous students.

The money doesn’t have to be paid back and it’s tax-free to full-time students.

Applications for Equity Scholarships are now open through UAC – and it’s easy to apply. It doesn’t cost anything and the application can be completed online. To apply, visit UAC’s Equity Scholarships site at www.uac.edu.au/equity/equityschols.html or call UAC on (02) 9752 0200. Deadline is Friday, 13 June 2008.
