White Gum Valley Public School (White Gum Valley WA)

Winner: Jade Dickerson

School: White Gum Valley Public School (White Gum Valley WA)

White Gum Valley Public School, WA – August 13, 2003
On August 13, Vibe members Denise Wilson and Dave Beaumont travelled to White Gum Valley Primary School in Western Australia to present Jade Dickerson with a well-deserved prize for a great story she wrote for Vibe’s ‘My Story’ competition.

Jade is in Year Five at the White Gum Valley Primary School, just south of Fremantle.

Under the watchful eye of her Aunty Kerry, Jade has made great progress in her school work since enrolling at White Gum Valley two years ago. Her hard work paid off after entering a story in Deadly Vibe’s nationwide ‘My Story’ competition.

Jade was excited about the award and thrilled to have Vibe visit the school to put on a barbecue for her class.

Vibe’s ‘My Story’ competition is sponsored by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) through its National Indigenous English Literacy and Numeracy Strategy. Malcolm Williams is the executive officer of DEST and proudly acted as the ambassador of the day in place of Aunty May O’Brien, who unfortunately couldn’t make it to Jade’s presentation.

After former Senior Detective Sergeant Neville Collard performed the welcome to country, Jade was presented with a winner’s plaque and a prize pack, before everyone enjoyed the BBQ under some glorious West Australian sunshine.

Jade and her friends are big fans of Vibe magazine, and leading up to the presentation they had been checking out the Vibe website for updates every week.

“Since we returned home we have received some great emails from Jade and her school friends,” says Denise. “All the kids had a great time at the barbecue and they have been telling us that they will now all be writing their own stories after being encouraged by Jade’s achievement.”

Everyone at the barbecue had a great time and, most importantly, the children finished the day with an added interest in reading and writing. All the children are looking forward to the next issue of Deadly Vibe and eagerly waiting to see who will win the next prize.
