THE NEWCASTLE CONNECTION!
Back on 24 September 2001, Vibe barbeque queens Denise Wilson and Alicia Coughlan of the Vibe team set out to reward 11-year-old Emma Honery of Platsburg Public School in Newcastle with a special barbeque event.

Emma entered the ‘Take an Ambassador to School’ essay-writing competition in Deadly Vibe – writing about what she would wish for if she had three wishes – and won with flying colours!

Sponsored by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science & Training (DEST) through its National Indigenous English Literacy & Numeracy Strategy, the barbeque featured a visit from Literacy & Numeracy Ambassador Jimmy Little.

By 10.30am the barbeque was sizzling and Emma and her classmates were totally hyped! With the help of some friendly parents and teachers, Vibe and DEST operatives ensured that all was in preparation for a deadly get together.

Lunchtime came around very quickly and 100 children from Years 4, 5 and 6, along with parents, teachers and 15 community Elders converged on the quadrangle for a sizzling meal of snags, chicken and salad.

Once that was over, the children moved to the assembly hall for a special presentation ceremony. A veteran entertainer and educator, Jimmy Little worked his musical magic in front of the entire 300-strong school, singing everything from “Old McDonald Had a Farm” to “Pretty Woman” to the old favourite “Royal Telephone”. And the children lapped it up!

But Emma Honery was the real star of the day and she handled all the attention with maturity and elegance. After receiving her special plaque and prize pack from Jimmy, she couldn’t wipe the smile off her face for the rest of the day!

Mission accomplished – what a rewarding visit!

So keep up the good work, kids. There are plenty more prize packs to be won and the Vibe team are travelling all over Australia throughout the year, in conjunction with DEST Indigenous Education Branch, rewarding those who display exceptional essay-writing skills.

Hope to see you at your school soon!
