Deadly Vibe Issue 93 November 2004

Winner lost for words

Independent dancer Jason Pitt was so surprised to be named the deadliest dancer of the year that he was almost lost for words when accepting his award.

“I’d like to say please support independent dance,” Jason said to the assembled crowd. “It’s where most of the innovation and innovative art is happening in terms of dance. I’m really nervous, so thanks.”

Afterwards, the 29-year-old relaxed and chatted happily about his work. “It’s really wonderful to have your community acknowledge the work you’re doing in independent theatre,” he said. “My culture is very important. It keeps me grounded, it keeps me together, it makes me feel rooted – I know where I come from. It’s always a strong ingredient that applies to how I think about dancing and my storytelling.”

Jason said he had always wanted to be a dancer. “There’s something quite magical about it,” he explained. “There’s that freedom of expression in being able to say things that you can’t say every day but you can say through movement – some of the taboo subject matters and stuff like that is exciting to express through dance.”

I was shocked bec I’m an independent artist and usually pple don’t get to see ind works yes, it’s a shock and it’s humbling. Its really wonderful to hv yr community acknowledge the work yr doing in ind theatre. [always wanted to be a dancer[ there’s something qt magical abt it, there’s that freedom of expression in being able to say things that you can’t say just every day but u can say thru mvment, some of the taboo subject matter and stuff like that its exciting to express thru dance. In a sense, dance for me is like the other side of me, maybe a bit more of the ego side, bec I’m kind of a shy person. It’s another side of me I can explore.
My culture is v imp, it keeps me grounded, it keeps me together, it makes me feel rooted – I know where I come from, there’s always a strong ingredient of information that applies to how I think abt dancing and my storytelling. 29

There’s so many pple I’d like to thank who support my work. I’d like to say pls support independent dance, it’s where most of the innovation and innovative art is happening in terms of dance. I’m realy nervous so thanks.
