Amos Scores Again
Rugby League is one sport that has always enjoyed a wealth of Indigenous talent, and now more then ever the code is practically bursting at the seams with deadly black footballers.
When it came down to announcing the winner of this year’s Deadly for Outstanding Achievement in Rugby League, the community had four very talented footballers to choose from, and it was never going to be a one horse race. While Matt Bowen certainly finished off the season on a huge high with the Cowboys and Scott Prince may have been a sentimental favourite for many, it was Amos Roberts’ stellar start to the season, consistent all-round form and the fact he finished the season as the league’s leading try-scorer that swayed the votes his way.
“I thought Matt Bowen would be the favourite, so it’s a real surprise to me,” admitted Amos on the night.
At only 23, and another of the many young, talented individuals who swept this year’s Deadlys, Amos has proven himself to be a great inspiration for other Indigenous youth. By winning this award it shows that he is now widely recognised in the community as one of our top sporting heroes.
“I wanted to be a rugby league player ever since I picked up a football when I was eight years old,” said Amos.
“My advice to other young kids is that anything is possible. I came from a small country town with big dreams and big aspirations and they all came true.”
