Record Voters support Deadlys

A record 29,000 votes were received for the 16th Deadly Awards this year, showing strong support amongst Indigenous Australians for the annual awards’ night which celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent and achievement.

Voting closed on 6 September and winners will be announced at a special Sunset Ceremony and, later, at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on Monday, 27 September 2010.
The Deadlys show begins when Australia’s up and coming Indigenous country music sensation Adam James and Karla Grant from the SBS host the Deadlys’ Sunset Awards in the northern foyer of the Sydney Opera House at 5.30pm.

The Sunset Awards include the judging of “Deadly Dressed” by Ian Thorpe and rising supermodel Samantha Harris, and the presentation of key music, sport and dance awards before the mainstage event in the Concert Hall of the Opera House at 8pm.

A special performance of Adam’s single Freedom Now Begins will conclude the Sunset Awards and start a night to come of outstanding music and dance, with opening performances by singer, songwriter and musician Frank Yamma and then blues, soul and country rock sensation, Dan Sultan.

They will be joined throughout the night by black Australia’s stars of music, dance and film, ensuring the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music, Sport, Entertainment and Community Awards, aka the Deadlys, will be a show not to be missed.

The Deadlys are not only entertainment at their best, but a feel good event which celebrates Indigenous talent and achievement, says Executive Producer Gavin Jones.

“It’s a wonderful celebration and acknowledgement of the depth of talent in Indigenous Australia today – all against a backdrop of glamour, fun and spectacular entertainment,” he says.

“And beyond the glitz and glamour, there is a more serious side to the Deadlys. By acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent and achievement, we are recognizing it and hopefully encouraging young Indigenous Australians to reach their potential.”

Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of the Deadlys this year! Tickets for the 2010 Deadlys ($45 or $30 concession) are available from the Sydney Opera House and entitle ticket holders to attend both the Sunset Award ceremony and the mainstage event.
