When you become a parent, everything changes. Just like that. There isn’t a book, video or pep talk that can wholly prepare you for the responsibility of bringing a little being into the world, then bringing them up. Becoming a parent is also a very emotional experience, especially if you’re a first-timer.
That said, it is a wonderful time of your life, so make the most of it and enjoy your baby every moment you can. Yes, it is difficult and daunting. But it’s also rewarding and, arguably, the most important thing you’ll ever set your mind to.
Babies don’t stay babies forever, so cherish your time together, watching and nurturing your little one as they grow into a child. It might sound like a cliché, but these really are the moments you remember forever after.
It is very important to have somewhere to call home and feel secure in as a new parent. Home can be anything from a bedroom in shared accommodation to your own house. If you need help with accommodation, call Centrelink and they will lead you in the right direction.
Being a parent is both tiring and time consuming. That means more time at home and less time with your friends. But you can still enjoy yourself. Invite some friends over, cook a hearty meal, hire a video or relax with your favourite CD.
Having a baby to feed and clothe may also mean giving up other things you have become used to, like quiet time to yourself. Find ways to divide household and parenting responsibilities with your partner, or get support from family and trusted friends.
You may like to contact a parent support group or attend parenting classes in your local area. Often, talking to other parents about what you’re going through is a real help. They’re may be going through similar experiences!
If this whole parenting thing leaves you feeling confused or isolated, go back to basics. Eat well, get plenty of regular exercise and remember to relax. Talk any problems through with your partner, family member or someone at your local Aboriginal health service. Remind yourself that you are doing a very important job. Once you have the basics covered, the rest will gradually fall into place.
Enjoy your child, but don’t forget about yourself!
