The best in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Music

ZK all the way

Last year Ellie Lovegrove was a standout competitor on X Factor and although she didn’t win the series, she showcased Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent to the nation. Now The Voice has answered back with the Indigenous duo, ZK.

The duo is comprised of Zaachariah Fielding and Kristal West, two young singers from remote communities who met four years ago in Adelaide. Over time they forged a friendship as well as a musical partnership; they now perform together and collaborate as songwriters.

They decided to put their musical talent to the test, auditioning for Series 3 of the reality series that focuses on the voice rather than looks. With family members as support, including Kristal’s Grandmother, Bonita Mabo – wife of the late land rights pioneer, Eddie Mabo – the two took to the stage.

ZK performed a rendition of Justin Bieber’s As Long As You Love Me, and while it was tense for a moment when none of the judges, including Ricky Martin, Joel Madden, will.i.am, and Kylie Minogue, had turned around nearing the end, eventually they caught pop-superstar, will.i.am’s attention. And with the hit of the buzzer, the two became members of team Will.

From there, after mentoring from their new coach, the two went on the perform Mumford and Sons’ The Cave in The Battle Rounds where they went toe-to-toe with another member of will.i.am’s team, Tasha Amoroso.

Although the judges admit not all notes were hit, ZK reigned supreme and will now go onto the Showdowns. In this elimination phase the surviving four acts from each team again compete against each other, with public votes deciding which one of the acts will advance. Once decided, the respective coach will pick one more team from the remaining three to move forward to the make final eight.

Should ZK manage to make it into the final phase, aka live rounds, they’ll compete against the other seven contestants with the public and coaches deciding 50/50 who’ll move onto the final four. With one team remaining for each coach, the final four will go head-to-head in the finale with the public deciding entirely who is The Voice.
