Countdown to Vibe 3on3 Thursday Island

If you like basketball, art, hip hop, rapping and break dancing, then you don’t want to miss Thursday Island’s National Indigenous 3on3 Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge – the Vibe 3on3® on Wednesday 8 June 2011.

The Vibe 3on3® – is a fun, free event for Aboriginals and non-Indigenous Australians. There’ll be basketball, dancing, music, health and culture to entertain and challenge young people. The event encourages sportsmanship, teaches new skills and builds self-esteem as well as promoting reconciliation at a grassroots level.

The Thursday Island 3on3 will be hosted by Aboriginal actor and Play School host Luke Carroll. There’ll also be plenty of role models on the day to inspire young people including rapper Dizzy Doolan, Aboriginal dancer Medika Thorpe and breakdancer Sam Carroll.

Cairns based artist Alick Tipoti and Cairns Taipans player Kerry Williams join our role models with local role models from Thursday Island, DJ Michael Loban and Francis Loban.

The action-packed event features a 3on3 basketball tournament, rapping and break dancing lessons, art workshops, a dance competition and a health expo, all accompanied by a backing track of the latest RnB, hip hop and Indigenous music.

To participate in the Vibe 3on3®, young people need to pre-register in teams of five through their school by Friday 3rd June. The event is capped at 400 kids so get in quick to gain your spot at the 3on3. The event will be held at the Ken Brown Oval, Cnr Pearl St and Victoria Parade, Thursday Island from 9am-2.30pm and will feature an opening ceremony, face painting and a health expo.

The Vibe 3on3® would not be possible without our sponsors the Department of Health and Ageing through the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Vibe Australia.

We also thank our local sponsors including the Torres Shire Council, Rotary Club, the Torres Strait Youth and Recreation Sporting Association, Thursday Island Bulk Butchers and Coral Sea Concreting. Thanks also to our supporters the Koori Mail, Deadly Sounds and Deadly Vibe.
