End of year exams can really stress you out. Here’s how to cope.
Facing your end of year exams can be a really stressful time. All that revision to do, and what if you don’t get good enough marks? Carrying all that worry around can really take its toll, but there are things you can do to make things easier on yourself.
Make a study timetable
It sounds like a boring old clichÃ©, but planning your study time can really help you to cope. Don’t just make time for study ” you need to make sure you have some relaxation time as well, or you could burn yourself out before you even get to the exam room. Break up your study into short segments of about 15-20 minutes, with short breaks in between. This will help you to keep focused.
Don’t expect too much of yourself ” you know what you’re capable of achieving, so aim for that and just do your best. This will help to avoid extra pressure, as well as warding off any disappointment when you get your results.
Don’t try to deal with any stress you might be feeling by drinking or taking drugs ” this will only fry your brain. Avoid drinking too much coffee, and make sure you have a good night’s sleep every night. Burning the midnight oil will only make you tired which will make it harder to concentrate the next day.
Don’t try and cram everything at once. Take clear, concise notes, use different coloured pens, and underline or highlight important points. Go over your notes regularly to help you remember them. Get friends or family to test you on them.
Don’t be shame to ask for help. If you’re having trouble, speak to your teacher. If you’re feeling stressed out, speak to a school counsellor or your family. Talking about your worries can really make them seem a lot smaller.
