You don’t need to be a classically trained ballerina or a hip hop star to benefit from dancing – no matter what style you prefer, dancing is a fantastic way to keep yourself fit, health and active.
But it’s not just your body that benefits. Dancing is also a great way to lift your mood and boost your self-esteem.
Why is low self-esteem bad?
Low self-esteem doesn’t only make you feel bad about yourself, it can also hold you back from reaching your goals, and can lead to unhealthy or dangerous life choices.
That’s why it’s so important to feel good about yourself – because then you really can become the best you can be.
Why dance?
When you dance, your body and your mind are working together. You get a real sense of achievement when you learn a new routine or complicated step, and performing to music in front of your peers is about as thrilling a high as you can get!
Dance teachers often talk of the amazing transformation they often see in young students who come to dance classes – from shy and nervous to confident and strong. Coordinators at the Vibe 3on3® regularly speak of the amazing changes they see in the young people who come out of their shell and participate in the dance activities at the event.
Michael Leslie is an internationally renowned dancer and choreographer who has been running successful dance and drama workshops for young people in the Pilbara region in Western Australia, through the Rio Tinto Community Investment Program.
“The most obvious element in my workshops is how quickly the students learn self-confidence,” Michael says. “Creativity always expands self-esteem.”
The teachers and parents of young people who have participated in Michael’s workshops have all noted significant increases in student confidence and self-esteem, which have lead to the added benefits of increased school attendance and better marks.
Why not look into starting a dance workshop in your own school or community?
