Keeping Our Kids Safe (Family Health)

You can’t be there to protect your kids every moment of every day. But there is plenty you can do to educate your kids and gain their trust. Here are some great tips for parents and carers, to keep our kids safe.

Listen to them

Try to understand what they’re saying and doing ” and why. Encourage them to talk about any problems they may be having, and be there to share their joys as well

Give them some space

Allow young fellas to experiment and make mistakes in a safe and supportive environment. It’s the best way to learn!

Have a help network

Find someone to turn to if you’re under stress. Don’t beat yourself up ” all parents get stressed out from time to time. Talk to someone you trust, and you’ll feel better.

Never raise your hand in anger

Don’t cross the line and hurt your kids. Take a moment if you’re angry ” for example, count to ten and think again. Remember, there is no such thing as a perfect parent.

Be informed

Check out your kids’ sporting club or other activities to make sure they have a child protection policy in place and follow guidelines about keeping children safe.

Teach them

Help your children learn ways to keep themselves safe, including how to call for help in an emergency.

Teach yourself

Learn about internet safety and teach children how to keep themselves safe on the internet.

Think about it

Only a small minority of cases of child abuse involve a total stranger. Although it’s hard to believe, kids are far more likely to be abused by someone they know, such as a parent, another relative or a family friend

Trust

Believe your kids. They might have a real reason why they don’t want to spend time with someone.

Don’t be shame

Don’t let pride or shame stand in the way of protecting a child. It is never too early or too late to ask for help.
