Over 100 teams of enthusiastic students enjoyed a day full of activities and learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle at Leeton’s National Indigenous 3on3 Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge on Wednesday 26th February.
Students from Leeton and across the Murrumbidgee region participated in Leeton’s second 3on3 at the Leeton Indoor Stadium for a day of 3on3 basketball, rapping and break dancing lessons, art workshops, a dance competition and a health expo.

For event producer Mayrah Sonter the day was fuelled by the generous support and effort from all involved.
“You could really feel the community spirit. We had so many committee members and volunteers standing alongside us to help with the event. It’s a credit to the local community. It was a wonderful venue,” she says.
“The entire event was overwhelmingly positive and built upon the success of last year’s event with over 100 teams rocking up to the Vibe 3on3.”
Special guest role model for the day was boxer Joey Williams fresh from winning the World Boxing Federation Junior Welterweight belt.
“Joey Williams is an outstanding role model for the kids at the 3on3. He shared his experiences, both challenging and rewarding in the new ‘Chat with a Champion’ activity where kids are learning to build resilience against tough times,” Mayrah says.
“Joey was joined by local role model Karen Ingram Johnson to discuss with the kids how they can best cope with difficult times in their lives and how they can access support in their local community.”
The young people hit it off with all of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander role models on the day.
“Dancers Juanita Duncan and Jake Thomson, who have both appeared on the Move It Mob Style® travelled from the NSW Central Coast and Sydney respectively to be at the Leeton 3on3. Rapper Jimblah continued to share his skills with the kids, as did DJ Songz who kept the beats pumping all day.”
Uncle William Ingram Snr welcomed us to Wiradjuri country in language before local Mayor of Leeton Shire Council Mr Paul Mayton officially declared the 2014 Leeton Vibe 3on3® open.
An interactive health expo was a highlight at the 3on3 with more than twelve local service providers attending to introduce themselves to the kids of Leeton. They included programs for youth mental health, alcohol and drug information, driving education with the Roads and Maritime Services, closing the gap information, anti-smoking messages, careers in health and good diet choices.
The 3on3 crew would like to thank the local sponsors for their support including Leeton Shire Council, Mick’s Bakehouse, Woolworths, Department of Sport and Recreation Wagga, Golden Apple Super Store IGA, Francis De Salle Catholic School and Murrumbidgee Medicare Local.
“We would like to send a big shout out to local committee for all their support as well as to all of the volunteers, students, teachers and health representatives who participated,” she says.
Vibe would like to acknowledge the assistance of “Supporting Communities to Reduce the Risk of Suicide” component of the “Taking Action to Tackle Suicide” Program.
The Vibe 3on3® would not be possible without its Principal Sponsor the Department of Health as well as our sponsors – the Australian Government and our supporters the Jimmy Little Foundation, National Rural Health Students Network, Koori Mail, Deadly Vibe, Deadly Sounds, Deadly Vibe Wire and deadlyvibe.com.au.
