No Bones About It

Keep your bones healthy now and you’ll thank yourself later.

Osteoporosis affects one in three women and one in eight men across the world. It is a condition that causes the bones to become brittle and fracture or break easily.

Although it mostly affects older women, there are things you can do to keep you bones strong and health now, so that you’ll have less chance of developing osteoporosis when you get older.

Risk factors for osteoporosis include having low body weight, not having your periods for any length of time, not doing enough exercise and not having enough calcium in your diet. Smoking and drinking are also big risk factors.

Make sure you get lots of exercise, cut out the ciggies and the grog, and eat lots of calcium-rich foods. Foods that are high in calcium include dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt, vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage, and canned fish such as sardines or salmon.

Did you know . . .?

We are born with 350 bones in our body, but as we grow some of these bones fuse together, so that a fully grown adult has only 206 bones. Over half of the bones in the human body are found in the hands and feet.
