Tattooing is a process in which the skin is punctured with a sharp tool or needle in order to introduce a dye under the top layer. Practised in ancient Egypt and in many indigenous cultures, the art of tattooing spread from Egypt across the western world, appearing, disappearing and reappearing throughout recorded history.
The first thing to keep in mind when considering on whether or not to get a tattoo is your age. You must be 18 years to get a tattoo. But even then, it’s a good idea to think long and hard about it. Tattoos aren’t just for Christmas – they’re for life. And they can be very difficult to remove later down the track.
Does it hurt?
Experts say that the more you want it, the less it hurts. However, most tattoos will hurt to a certain extent, more so when they are close to bone.
Where does it hurt the most?
Areas of the body that are covered tend to be tenderer than other areas, e.g. inside arm, inner thigh and spine hurt the most.
Where does it hurt the least?
The top of the arm and the top of the thigh.
Where do most people put them?
There are as many locations as there are parts of the body. Just remember, you’ll only feel it for a while, but it will always be where you choose to put it, so think very carefully.
How much does it cost?
There is great variation when it comes to the cost of a tattoo, depending on size and complexity of design. Prices can range from $55 to $450. You can make up your own design or choose something from the tattoo studio.
Remember…
Tattooing is illegal for anyone under 18 years of age and any tattooist who agrees to do if you are underage is breaking the law. Professional and properly licensed studios will ask you for your driver’s licence to prove you are 18 years or over.
DIY tattooing is very painful and very unsafe. There are dangers of infections such as hepatitis, HIV and tetanus, to name but a few.
Laser removal of tattoos is not as wonderful as it sounds. It’s rare for a tattoo to be completely erased without a trace. So make sure you really want a tattoo before going and getting one!
