Fruit and Nuts

Favourite summer squelchers!

It’s summer again and all the fruits are ripe for the picking. Don’t waste time, there are so many fruity treats to taste and so many ways to enjoy them. They are a great source of many essential vitamins and minerals. Eating a wide variety of fruits and trying different kinds helps to make sure we get all the goodness we need. So don’t just stick to the trusty old apples and bananas, go troppo this summer and enjoy the fruits of the earth!
Blend some mangos, papayas, bananas and milk to make a deliciously refreshing drink or chop up a whole selection and make a fruit salad served with a slither of ice cream!

Nuts ‘n’ nibbles

Nuts and seeds are great healthy snacks for summer. Not only do they taste good, they are an excellent source of protein and those things we call the ‘good fats and oils’. Nuts can be eaten on their own or you can mix them up in a bag and add some dried fruits like raisins or sultanas to sweeten them up.

We forget the variety of nuts that are available in Australia and give peanuts too much attention. What about almonds? They are a fantastic source of calcium for healthy teeth and bones. Fresh macadamias are also very good for you and they taste yummy!

Water = H2O

Drink lots of water, even when you are not thirsty. So many of the things we do sap our body’s water supply! Drinking tea and coffee, exercising and eating sugary foods all take water from our bodies. Every one of our cells needs water to survive. In fact 70 per cent of our body is made of water, so we need to constantly top this level up.

Our kidneys use water to keep our bodies free from the various waste products that we make. Many juices, especially fizzy drinks, contain lots of sugar that actually dehydrates the body and takes water from our cells. It is therefore very important that we drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
Lack of water can lead to dehydration, which causes tiredness and crankiness. Dehydration can be really dangerous, especially in hot dry climates. So stay cool this summer and drink up!
