Vibe 5
It’s hard to believe it’s August already – the year is already more than half over, and the Deadlys is just around the corner! We’ve featured some awesome Indigenous achievers in this issue, from a Shakespearean actor to a hip hop crew. Talk about diversity! Get stuck into August Deadly Vibe and see for yourself how much Indigenous people are accomplishing around Australia.
A New Record!
Last month we reported on the record-breaking sale of Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s painting, Earth’s Creation, which sold for over a million. This record has already been broken by the sale of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri’s major painting Warlugulong 1977, which was auctioned at Sotheby’s for $2.4 million!
Dreaming under the Stars
The Message Sticks Film Festival is heading to Darwin’s unique outdoor Deckchair Cinema this month, as part of the Darwin Festival. The program features 13 short films, including Crocodile Dreaming, starring David Gulpilil. For more information visit www.deckchaircinema.com
Pledge your support!
More than 60,000 Australians have pledged their support for governments to take immediate action to raise Indigenous life expectancy to that of other Australians by signing the Close the Gap pledge. This is already having an impact on this country’s decision makers, but we still have a long way to go – head to www.oxfam.org.au to find out what you can do.
Drink Smart
This month in health we focus on the dangers of alcohol misuse, and how it can damage more than just your health. Make sure you and your family understand the importance of drinking alcohol responsibly – it will protect their health as well as the health of our community.
