The Stolen Generations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership will be recognised at the 18th Deadlys® on Tuesday, at the Sydney Opera House.
The inaugural Marcia Langton Lifetime Award for Leadership has been introduced to recognise the contribution of Indigenous leaders to their community and to the wider Australia society.
The Outstanding Contribution to the Stolen Generations award recognises the work of individuals and organisations in helping the Stolen Generations recover from the grief and trauma they experienced. A new Hall of Fame award, the Lifetime Contribution Award for Healing the Stolen Generations promises to be a memorable moment on the Opera House Stage.
Aboriginal Professor Marcia Langton will present the winner of the inaugural leadership award on the Concert Hall stage at the Deadlys®.
“We are honoured to have Professor Langton put her name to a Deadlys® leadership award, considering her immense achievements both in the academic world, to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and to leadership over the decades,” Deadlys Executive Producer and founder Gavin Jones says.
“It will be a proud moment for all, when the winner of the Marcia Langton Lifetime Award for Leadership is announced.”
Similarly, the Lifetime Contribution Award for Healing the Stolen Generations will focus national attention again on the Stolen Generations and the ongoing impact of past polices on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
“Working with Stolen Generations is among the most difficult of vocations, and yet, hundreds of Indigenous people daily give of themselves to help those affected recover from trauma,” Gavin says.
“Healing is ongoing and while we had the national apology in 2008, there is much more to be done.”
The Lifetime Contribution Award for Healing the Stolen Generations is proudly supported by the Healing Foundation.
The 2012 Deadlys® will be held at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday, 25 September and celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievement across music, sport, entertainment and community.
The Deadlys® will be simulcast to listeners live via Koori Radio, through the National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS) and Community Radio Network (CRN) services, and broadcast on SBS1 on 30 September 2012.
