Over 50 teams of enthusiastic students enjoyed a day full of activities and learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle at Tennant Creek’s National Indigenous 3on3® Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge on Wednesday 4th June.
Yesterday’s event was especially significant, as it was the 150th Vibe 3on3® and the whole team were very excited to be sharing the special occasion with the Tennant Creek community.
Event Producer Mayrah Sonter said that the day was hugely successful with a great turn out from the local and neighbouring communities.
“Students from Ali Curung and Murray Downs joined the local students in Tennant Creek’s 3on3 at the Tennant Creek Sports and Recreation Centre for a day of 3on3 basketball, rapping and break dancing lessons, art workshops, a dance competition and a health expo.
“It was the third time that we have been to Tennant Creek and it was a big one because it was our 150th 3on3®! We were very glad to have celebrated this milestone event with this community, we love coming back here and want to extend a huge thank you to all who came along.” she says.
We had a Welcome to Country by Richard James and an opening ceremony presided over by local dignitaries, including Joe Carter, representing the Julalikari Aboriginal Corporation. The crowd was also entertained by local dance group, the TC Dance Crew, who gave an energetic and inspirational performance.
“Our role models on the day included rapper Jimblah, who is always great and very popular with the kids, we had DJ Thomas Watkins and Move it Mob Style dance workshops with Ryka Satrick. Our fantastic art workshops were run by Heather and Bronwyn from Nyinkka Nyunyu.” Mayrah says.
Another highlight for the students was the chance to hear from a popular female rapper.
“Chat with a Champion for this event was with Naomi Wenitong from The Last Kinection. She has overcome many obstacles in her life, as well as great career success, so she was a brilliant role model for the kids to hear from about developing resilience and making good decisions.” Mayrah says.
There was a great turn out on the day.
“We had over 50 teams attend, which is massive for a remote community and the largest we have ever had at a Tennant Creek event. We’d like to give a big shout out to the local committee for all their hard work in the planning and running of the event.”Mayrah said.
The 3on3 crew would also like to thank the local sponsors for their support including Barkly Wholesales, Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation, Nyinkka Nyunyu Arts Centre, Tennant Creek Sports & Recreation Centre, Barkly Regional Council & St John’s Ambulance.
Vibe would like to acknowledge the assistance of “Supporting Communities to Reduce the Risk of Suicide” component of the “Taking Action to Tackle Suicide” Program.
