Central Australian success-story, Tjintu Desert Band, continue to grow in popularity with the release of a new music video, an upcoming performance at Barunga Festival, and their second single on the way.
Following the release of Tjintu Desert Band’s debut album ‘Tjamuku Ngurra’ in March, CAAMA Music has now produced a music video to complement the success of their first single, which has been added to radio playlists across the country – from CAAMA Radio’s network of Indigenous community stations, to the massive ABC Radio network covering both metropolitan and regional areas nation-wide.
The music video for the title track, meaning ‘Grandfather’s Country’ was shot in Alice Springs, featuring band members, local talent, and Alice Springs’ identity and breakfast presenter ‘GMan’, from CAAMA Radio.
Extra footage from community concerts was filmed in the Central Australian Aboriginal communities of Amata and Hermannsburg. As well as being available via CAAMA Music’s YouTube channel, it will soon be added to ICTV’s programming, as well as their online platform Indigitube.
Micheal ‘Miko’ Smith, CAAMA Music manager says: “We’ve all been blown away by the response from the media and the public – the band most of all. We’ve got festival invitations coming through and new fans getting in touch, some from as far away as Germany! The band has been really touched by the music reviews in the paper.”
Tjintu Desert Band’s newest single ‘Kapi’:
The Canberra Times has said: “Tjintu Desert Band capture that beauty and heart of Indigenous music”, while Brisbane’s Courier Mail has said: “They would light up a stage at Bluesfest or Woodford with their rock steady grooves and soulful voices”.
Tjintu Desert Band’s next festival performance will be at Barunga Festival 6-9 June, Australia’s longest-running Aboriginal cultural festival, held each year in the community of Barunga in the Roper Gulf Shire of the Northern Territory.
“Barunga Festival is about the Northern Territory, and to have a band from Central Australia is really exciting. We would love to see more in the future,” says Mark Grose, Barunga Festival Director.
On their way north, the band will also perform in Tennant Creek at Jackson’s Bar on Thursday 5 June.
The next single to be released from their album is ‘Kapi’, featuring spoken word artist and rapper Radical Son, who releases his debut album this month. ‘Kapi’, meaning ‘rain’ in the Aboriginal language of Luritja, is the opening track for the album Tjamuku Ngurra and has already received airplay on Triple J’s ‘Roots n All’ program, as well as being added to ABC local radio programming.
Watch NITV National Arts Culture and Entertainment show Around the Traps this Friday night at 6pm to see a story on the making of Tjintu’s music video, hosted by Catherine Satour. The show will be repeated each Friday for the following month.
