Central Australian Aboriginal television station Imparja TV has broadcast the world’s first music tv program. Thirty eight live performances by Aboriginal bands and singers are to be broadcast over the six completed episodes.
The six part series includes live footage of Yothu Yindi, Warumpi and Blekbala Mujik from last October’s historic Land Rights concerts in Darwin and Alice Springs.
Presented by local Aboriginal presenters Michelle Fullerton and Craig Tilmouth there’s also footage specifically filmed at the CAAMA Music recording studio as well as some brand new and classic video clips.
Other artists featured include Bart Willoughby, Frank Yamma, Coloured Stone, Tiddas, Christine Anu, Sunrize Band, as well as up and coming artists Teenage Band, Blackstorm and Warren Williams.
Produced as a joint venture between CAAMA and Imparja the series aims to profile Australia’s indigenous music scene. The programs expose any indigenous artists, not just those signed to CAAMA Music.
“Indigenous musicians are creating more videos, touring widely and producing more high quality records. This television production is an indicator of the viability of Australia’s indigenous music.” Said Rich Micallef of CAAMA recently on the Imparja news.
