Indigenous television production Move It Mob Style® has been named as one of five nominees of the Most Outstanding Children’s Program category at the 56th annual TV Week Logie Awards.
This prestigious award for the Deadly Vibe Group produced Move It Mob Style®, comes as a welcome surprise to the producers, cast and crew who are currently busy producing the fourth season of the popular show.
Managing Director of the Deadly Vibe Group and Executive Producer of Move It Mob Style®, Gavin Jones says that the nomination means a lot and says a lot about the quality of the production.
“We all work so hard and take so much care with the production of Move It Mob Style®. We are a very small team, totally dedicated to getting a great show to air, that also means something to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and young Australians,” Gavin says.
“Being recognised in this way says to me and my team that our work is respected and appreciated.”
Produced by the Deadly Vibe Group with support from the Australian Government through the Department of Health and NITV, Move It Mob Style® first hit television screens on NITV and ABC 3 in March 2012 as a dance-based series targeting Indigenous youth.
“At our core, Move It Mob Style® is about talking to our young people about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and looking after your health. Not by preaching but by showing how great life can be if you do. And we try to make these messages cool, cultural and relevant,” Gavin says.
Each series so far has been approximately 20 x 30 minute episodes featuring some of the best Indigenous dancers in Australia, having performed at national and international events throughout their careers.
Through their travels across Australia, the Move It Mob Style® crew have captured health and Indigenous cultural segments giving viewers an insight into remote, urban and regional lifestyles of Australia’s first peoples.
“It never ceases to amaze me when we are researching and producing the show and all the stories, how many great people are out there across Australia from all walks of life doing amazing things; whether its teaching cultural practices to our young people, or helping to keep people engaged in health and well-being, or getting young people to finish year 12,” Gavin says.
Move It Mob Style® aims to educate people not only outside of schools, but inside too with a range of classroom resources available to teachers to print off from the website, www.moveitmobstyle.com.au. Gavin hopes that they will be increasingly utilised in the future.
“I think we have a winning formula that we have worked really hard to fine tune over the years. We have written and uploaded teachers lesson plans to our website so Move It Mob Style® can have a credible place in the classroom as well,” Gavin says.
“I’d really like to see more teachers embrace Move It Mob Style® not only for dance education but for other areas of the curriculum like health, belonging and subjects to do with identity and society.”
Other nominees in the category include Dance Academy (ABC3), Nowhere Boys (ABC3), Play Along With Sam (Nick Jr) and Play School (ABC4Kids).
