Entries are open for the 2010 Heart Foundation Indigenous Student Art Award and, this year, secondary school and university students can enter too.
TAFE Queensland Chief Operating Officer Deb Daly said the award, which offered state-wide exposure, had proven popular so it was being opened up to Queensland students from year 8 upwards.
“The success of the award has meant it has grown every year to attract a growing number of talented young artists,” Ms Daly said.
“Initially it was piloted for TAFE students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, as a partnership with the Health Foundation, however entry has now been extended to Indigenous secondary school and university students, as well as TAFE students.”
“This year the award has also secured sponsorship from Channel 7 and Bishopp Outdoor Advertising, meaning prize-winning artworks would receive even greater exposure.
“It is an amazing opportunity for any emerging Indigenous art student in the state to share their art that has been inspired by their own communities,” Ms Daly said.
“Student winners and runners up in each of the categories will have the opportunity to showcase their artwork alongside professional Queensland Indigenous artists, as well as participate in art workshops with them.
“The artworks should reflect the students’ indigenous culture, as well as the artist’s skill, originality and conceptualisation. They should evoke communal celebration in each of the four categories,” Ms Daly said.
The categories are photography, carving 2D, carving 3D and textiles.
Entrants are also asked to provide a brief description of their project, a detailed description and a visual sketch.
If a student’s artwork is sold, a 30 percent donation from the sale price goes to the Heart Foundation for research projects. Last year $30,000 was raised.
Award entries opened this week (June 1, 2010) and close on July 31, 2010 with the winners announced on August 13.
Winners will showcase their artwork at exhibitions throughout Queensland between September and December, 2010.
Previous winners are Barbara McMahon of Barrier Reef TAFE (2009) and Taum Reuben from Tropical North TAFE (2008).
