Australian legend Ernie Dingo is one of the bright stars travelling to Townsville on 26 and 27 May for the community’s first-ever Vibe Alive.
He will be joined by former Harlem Globe Trotter Dwayne Cross and actor Michael Tuahine as the community celebrates the talent of Townsville’s young people and supports them making smart education and employment choices.
The two-day youth festival will challenge and inspire the students of Townsville and beyond as they form teams to compete in a huge variety of activities including: Indigenous games; numeracy and literacy activities; dance and singing; and goal setting.
Teams race to get the answers to questions about celebrity role models, paint their dream job, interview health professionals, show off their dance skills and quiz people about their careers.
Registrations are now open for schools interested in being involved with teachers from public and private schools from Brisbane to the Torres Strait deciding how many groups to bring.
Executive Producer Gavin Jones said it was always exciting to see how far schools travel to attend the festivals.
“There are some schools who will travel for three days to get to a festival, for some it’s just across town, but for everyone who comes, there are two days jam-packed with fun and learning,” he said.
“One of the great things about working as a team is you can build a group of young people who are good at a range of things so there is a mix of talents.
“This means groups are working together, encouraging each other and making new friends.”
After a full day of running, playing, creating and setting goals, the lights go up on the big stage and the gates are thrown open for the free community concerts.
The best group performers from the day’s dance and singing activities are put under the spotlight and the crowds go wild for the celebrity performers: Courtney Walter from So You Think You Can Dance?; former Hi-5 performer Nathan Foley and comedian Kevin Kropinyeri are on the bill.
Vibe Alive is funded by the Australian Government’s Community Festivals for Education Engagement program, designed to encourage school attendance, retention and healthy lifestyles for all young Australians, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, in rural and remote areas.
