Some of Australia’s best known Indigenous role models will be at the Leeton National Indigenous 3on3 Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge – the Vibe 3on3® on Wednesday, 26 February.
Well-known artist and comedian Kevin Kropinyeri is just one of the inspiring role models who will be joined by a host of talented performers including actor Luke Carroll who will MC the action-packed event.
“The Vibe 3on3® offers the young people of Leeton and surrounding areas the chance to take part in 3on3 basketball, rapping and break dancing lessons, art workshops, a dance competition and a health expo, all accompanied by the latest RnB, hip hop and Indigenous music,” says Executive Producer Gavin Jones.
Kevin Kropinyeri will host the art workshops and has been involved with the Vibe 3on3® for many years as an artist. More recently he has gained national attention as a professional comedian and his star is certainly on the rise. He performed a series of shows at the 2013 International Melbourne Comedy Festival and is booked out solidly with comedy gigs.
Our high energy Deadly Move it Mob Style® dancers Jake Thomson and Juanita Duncan are getting ready to show off their moves at the Vibe 3on3® in Leeton.
Jimblah, one of the freshest and most powerful voices in local hip hop, will be hosting the rap workshop. Jimblah’s latest album ‘Phoenix’ was released October 2013 and was universally adored by critics and fans and quickly stormed to #1 on the AIR Chart.
The Vibe 3on3® is also pleased to announce that local sportsman, Joey Williams will be the health role model this year. Joey is now a professional boxer following a career in rugby league, where he played with the Canterbury Bulldogs, Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Along with a host of inspiring role models, the Vibe 3on3® hosts a special health expo, which teaches young people about healthy lifestyles that helps them to look and feel good, and get the most out of life! The Vibe 3on3® health expo brings local and regional health organisations together into one area so that young people can connect with the health providers in their communities, and learn about their health in a fun, engaging and interactive environment.
“We want our young mob to be the best they can be and that means being strong when things get tough and not being shame to ask for help if you have to. That’s why our health expo is so important to the event, because it shows kids who’s on hand to help when needed.” says Executive Producer Gavin Jones
In addition, this year at the Vibe 3on3® we have a focus on connection – opportunities to share stories, resources and culture. The ‘Chat with a Champion’ workshop for young people is led by a Vibe facilitator, a local mental health worker mentor and a high profile Indigenous celebrity role model.
“There’ll be opportunities for the young people to learn about keeping your cool under pressure, better ways to manage conflict, and some good tools to help problem-solving. One of our biggest messages we reinforce on the day, is staying away from drugs and alcohol.” says Executive Producer Gavin Jones
There’ll also be an opening ceremony and a free healthy breakfast and BBQ lunch for young people attending the event. To participate, young people need to pre-register in teams of four or five through their school by Wednesday 19 February.
The event is capped at 400 students so get in quick to gain your spot. It will be held at the Leeton Indoor Stadium, Leeton NSW 2705
