The beautiful Jess Beck will be a role model at the Mt Gambier Vibe 3on3
Get ready Mt Gambier – the popular National Indigenous 3on3 Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge – the Vibe 3on3® is heading your way on Thursday, 28 November.
An array of multi-talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander role models will be on hand to interact with students, pass on their experiences and show how they stay strong and healthy.
Singer/songwriter Jess Beck, originally from Mingbool country near Mt Gambier, will be attending as will Adelaide-based rapper Jimblah who’s just released his new album Phoenix.
Former Australian Rules footballer with the Essendon Football Club, Nathan Lovett-Murray will be the sports role model at the Mt Gambier Vibe 3on3®.
He’ll be joined by hip hop star and host of ABC3 and NITV’s Move it Mob Style® Brothablack (Shannon Williams) will MC the action-packed event which features a 3on3 basketball tournament, rapping and break dancing lessons, art workshops and a dance competition.
There is also a health expo, all accompanied by a backing track of the latest RnB, hip hop and Indigenous music.
Move it Mob Style® dancers Shari Togo and Darren Compton will be showing off their moves and DJ Songz will be putting some beat into the music at the Vibe 3on3®
The event encourages sportsmanship, teaches new skills and builds self-esteem, as well as promoting reconciliation at a grassroots level. At the Mt Gambier Vibe 3on3® there will be an increased focus on bringing together mental health service providers in the health expo.
“The Vibe 3on3® offers the young people of Mt Gambier and surrounding areas the chance to take part in 3on3 basketball, rapping and break dancing lessons, art workshops, a dance competition and a health expo, all accompanied by the latest RnB, hip hop and Indigenous music,” Executive Producer Gavin Jones says.
“It offers the young people of the community a chance to learn about sportsmanship, leadership and staying healthy by respecting ourselves and others, our culture and our community. And the importance of looking out for each other and yarning when you’re not feeling all that flash.
“There’ll also be opportunities for the young people to learn about keeping your cool under pressure, better ways to manage conflict, and some good tools to help problem-solving. One of our biggest messages we reinforce on the day, is staying away from drugs and alcohol.
“We want our young mob to be the best they can be and that means being strong when things get tough and not being shame to ask for help if you have to. That’s why our health expo is so important to the event, because it shows our kids who’s on hand to help when needed.
“Most of all we want our young people to have fun at the 3on3 and be proud of who of they are!”
There’ll also be an opening ceremony and a free healthy breakfast and BBQ lunch for young people attending the event.
To participate, young people need to pre-register in teams of four or five through their school by 21 November.
The event is capped at 400 students so get in quick to gain your spot. The event will be held at the Icehouse Basketball Stadium, Commercial Street West, Mount Gambier.
