Claim the date! Monday 8th July 2013 Sydney’s Hyde Park will once again come alive with culture during the 2013 NAIDOC in the City celebrations.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Sydney and surrounding areas are invited to the event on Monday 8 July from 11am-3pm, at Hyde Park. There will be live performances, the chance to participate in modern and traditional dance and weaving, sample the food and the art, or just enjoy the day with family and friends.
NAIDOC Week is on this year from 7-14 July and is a time when all Australians come together to recognise the contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make to Australia’s national identity. NAIDOC in the City is produced by City of Sydney with the assistance of Vibe Australia under the creative direction of arts presenter and cultural communicator Rhoda Roberts.
The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week celebrations is We value the vision: Yirrkala Bark Petitions 1963, and proudly celebrates the 50th anniversary of the presentation of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions to the Commonwealth Parliament. The petitions were a milestone in Australia’s history, and aimed to gain the Parliament’s recognition of the Yolngu peoples’ traditional rights and ownership of their land. They were the first traditional documents recognised by the Commonwealth Parliament and helped shape Australia’s acknowledgement of Aboriginal people and their land rights.
NAIDOC in the City will celebrate this historic cornerstone and remain true to the NAIDOC spirit of showcasing the culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through ceremony, song, dance, stories and art.
