Now in its fifth year, the Vibe 3on3™ continues to travel around the nation, bringing a very important message to remote Aboriginal communities and regional centres.
Running the Vibe 3on3™ for the first time in a new location takes a great deal of preparation and hard work from both the Vibe crew and the local community. But it’s also a very special event that everyone looks forward to.
And so when the 3on3 rolled into Bourke for the weekend of August 28 and 29, there was plenty of excitement and anticipation – here was the first ever 3on3 basketball and hip hop challenge to be held in an outback New South Wales town!
The Bourke region is the home of the Ngemba, Murrawarri and Gurnu people, and the large Indigenous community got right behind the 3on3 to make it a huge success.
While the event is based on 3on3 basketball, there is plenty more than just sport on offer. Break dancing workshops for both boys and girls ran continuously over the weekend, as did the art and writing workshops and a health expo. And all this bounced along to the sound of continuos hip hop, RnB and Indigenous music played by Vibe’ residents DJ, Geoffrey Johnson.
All elements of the 3on3 were in full effect in Bourke, as 57 teams from all over the region signed up to take part in the basketball action. Young people from as far away as Wilcannia, Coonamble and Brewarrina and Enngonia turned up to join in the fun.
“It was exciting to be in the outback and to spend such a great weekend with the Bourke community,” said 3on3 coordinator Claude Williams. “The energy of the young people and the commitment of the parents in the community to the success of the 3on3 has been very impressive
“A huge thanks must be given to the local organising committee, especially Amy Stuart and Kevin Kropinyeri, who were two major reason why we were able to bring the 3on3 to Bourke and make it such a success.”
For Gavin Jones, executive producer of the 3on3, seeing the event get off to such an enthusiastic and smooth start in a new location was just another sign of how the 3on3 continues to go from strength to strength around the country.
“The children of Bourke are full of energy and fun, and it was great to watch them in action as they took to the basketball court and dance floor,” Gavin said. “These kids really gave it their all, ensuring that our first trip to Bourke was a memorable one.”
The Vibe 3on3™ would not be possible without its sponsors Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation, the Department of Health and Ageing through the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts. Vibe Australia would also like to thank 2Cuz for providing some great pre-event advertising as well as the Department of Community Services, Bourke Aboriginal Health Service, Dept of Education and Training, Family Support Services, IGA and the Bourke Shire Council.
The Vibe 3on3™ is a two day Aboriginal youth weekend festival that incorporates basketball, dancing, art, culture and health. We aim to promote healthy lifestyles, strengthen communities and boost self-esteem. The Vibe 3on3™ is also an excellent opportunity for health services and related organisations to introduce themselves to the wider community. For more information, go to www.vibe.com.au
