Tears for Deadly artist
One of the most emotional moments at this year’s Deadlys came when the Deadly for Visual Art was announced.
The photographer and film-maker Michael Riley, who passed away in August, was named Outstanding Visual Artist.
To a warm round of applause and cheers, Michael’s cousin, Melissa Abraham, and his aunt, Joyce Abraham, made their way to the dais to accept Michael’s trophy and Deadly ring.
As tears streamed down her face, Melissa bravely made her speech. “First of all, I’d like to say it’s with a great sorrow that Michael couldn’t be here today to accept this award.
“He was a great inspiration to very many people and I know he’d be very much appreciative of this. I’d like to thank everyone who voted for him and the Deadly awards as well for honouring him in such a way – thanks everybody.
“He passed away in August after a long and courageous battle, and I’d just like to say thanks.”
Later, Melissa said she was overwhelmed with emotion as she started making her speech.
“There were some really good friends and family of his there, and we all miss him heaps,” she said.
“He was a great man with a lot of integrity.”
