A New Addition for the New Year, We welcome Cathy Freeman…

This story originally appeared in Deadly Vibe Magazine Issue #12 November, 1997

We have just opened The Vault – all the back stories from old editions – dating back to the 1990s. To know where we are going, it's important to understand where we have been. And that story you can follow in the Deadly Vibe Vault!

Throughout the last twelve months we have been following on the trials and tribulations of our brightest star, Cathy Freeman. Cathy always seems to be winning something, world titles, national awards as well as the love and adoration from all Australians.

This year we focussed on Cathy, firstly when she won the Sporting Personality of the Year Award at the Telstra Australian Sports Awards presented by the Prime Minister, Mr John Howard.

But the highlight of the year and of her career so far would have to be when Cathy entered athletic history as the first Indigenous Australian and first Australian woman to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Athens, joining Robert de Castella as the country’s only gold medallists from these titles.

Cathy thrilled the nation when she was hailed the fastest woman in the world over 400 meters.

This year Cathy took out Sportswomen of the Year at the National Aboriginal Sports Awards and the National Athlete of the Year at the Telstra Australian Sports Awards.

BUT the biggest Cathy Freeman story for us is this one; she is joining the Deadly Vibe team to write the On Track column.

Cathy will be penning some inspirational words on topics ranging from nutrition, motivation as well as some words on success.

Keep your eye on this page in coming months to unveil ON Track the words of wisdom from our world champion.
